Funding

Jonathan Larson Grant

  • In case you missed it last month, you have 3 days left to apply for this unrestricted grant. The award invests in the writers’ broader artistic careers rather than funding one specific project.

  • Reward: $20,000+

  • Deadline: September 4th

Anna Sosenko Assist Trust

  • Financial assistance for early-career theatre artists to fund project-specific expenses, such as studio rental, demo production, etc.

  • Reward: In the low thousands.

  • Deadline: Rolling

Development

Prospect Musical Theatre Lab

  • Writing lab for roughly 8–10 writing teams to create original short musicals around a shared theme, followed by development and rehearsal. Comes with a modest stipend and culminates in a public presentation.

  • Deadline: September 10th

National Music Theater Conference

  • The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center selects original, unproduced music-theatre works for two-week workshop residencies in Waterford, Connecticut, with professional artistic support and public readings.

  • Reward: Stipend + competitive development support

  • Deadline: September 30th

New Plays for Young Audiences

  • NYU Steinhardt selects three full-length Theatre for Young Audiences scripts for intensive one-week development periods at the Provincetown Playhouse, with rehearsals, dramaturgy, and public readings.

  • Reward: Modest honorarium.

  • Deadline: September 30th

Looking ahead: If you produce your own work, it’s definitely time to start prepping for your Brooklyn Arts Fund application, or any of the similar opportunities for your borough!

Residencies

Villa Barr Art Park Artist In Residency

  • Residencies outside Detroit pairing visiting and local artists. Visiting residents receive on-site housing, private studio space, shared fabrication facilities, and are expected to propose public engagement.

  • Stipend: $1,000+

  • Deadline: September 14th

Jentel Artist Residency

  • A month-long residency on a working ranch in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming for visual artists and writers/composers. Provides a private room, a separate studio, and shared living space.

  • Application fee: $30

  • Stipend: $300

  • Deadline: September 15th

CasaSanVito Artist Residency

  • One-month residency hosting two artists in Italy at an 18th-century frescoed palazzo, featuring private bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of shared spaces.

  • Application fee: $25

  • Reward/Stipend: $0

  • Deadline: September 30th

Millay Arts Residency

  • Multidisciplinary two-week to one-month residency at Millay Arts in Austerlitz, New York, running April–November.

  • Residents receive a private bedroom and studio, groceries, communal chef-prepared dinners, and local transportation.

  • Application fee: $45 ($60 late deadline)

  • Residency fee: $100

  • Deadline: October 1st
