Theatre Writer Opportunities for February 2026

Sair here! February may be the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t full of grants, festivals, artist residencies, and more. Make sure to save your favorite submissions for later so you can get them in before the deadline.
Funding
A national award program providing an unrestricted cash grant to emerging artists in theater, dance, and film. Very prestigious.
Applicants must be nominated by a non-profit or a previous award recipient.
Award of $15,000
Deadline for Nomination: February 2nd
The Charles S. Longcope Jr. Writers and Artists Grant
A grant for the development of LGBTQ+ work run through the Gay & Lesbian Review.
After completion, the expectation is that you’ll then write an article about your work for the review.
Award up to $5,000
Deadline: February 15th
Funding for artist who are “at risk” of persecution, censorship, or threats due to their creative work.
Awards between $500 and $2,000
Deadline: Rolling
Development
Seeking new, unproduced work to participate in a 1-5 week developmental residency.
Stipend between $1,000 and $5,000 depending on project requirements.
Deadline: February 2nd
Live & In Color Musical Theatre Development Program
Submissions for production at an autumn retreat in Salem, Connecticut that will culminate in a staged presentation to an audience.
Max cast size of 4
$1,000 stipend, plus food, housing, and travel
Deadline: February 15th
Playwrighting Fellowship at Royal Family Productions
A fellowship that will support one Black Female writer in creating a one-woman show centering Black joy. All genres welcome to apply.
$1,000 stipend
Deadline: February 15th
A festival of short plays (20 min or less) with cash prizes to be won.
$20 application fee waived for Dramatist Guild members.
"No musicals, unless you are providing accompaniment."

A note for composers who also write in other genres: I recently found this site, The American Composers Forum. Most of what they post is for Classical, Opera, etc. Not quite theatre-adjacent enough for me to add it to my usual list of resources, but if you’re a multi-hyphenate it may be worth taking a look!
Residencies
A prestigious multi-disciplinary artist colony in New Hampshire offering 2–8 week residencies in a woodland campus.
$30 application fee
Deadline: February 10th and September 10th
A solitary 6-12-week residency in the Berkshires!
Must be 25+ with a drivers license.
$35 application fee
Stipend of $5,500/month
Kimmel Harding Nelson Residency
An international residency spanning 2-8 weeks in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Collaborators welcome!
$35 application fee
Stipend of $175/week
