Tax tip: Keep a running tally of earnings and expenses incurred through your work in the arts. For many grants and commissions, you are responsible for paying taxes on that income, so it’s really useful to have your deductions handy. Last month I reminded you that application and residency fees are tax-deductible. Some other common deductions in our field are theatre tickets, recording equipment, studio space rentals, headshot photographer fees, and more. For a comprehensive resource on what to deduct, I like this list from Stride.

Prospect Musical Theatre Lab

Deadline in Autumn

Annually, the good folks over at Prospect Theatre Company select up to 10 writing teams to participate in this fast-paced, generative lab, where you are challenged to write a 10-minute musical in response to a chosen prompt. Every participant receives a stipend, but the real value is found in the experience itself. Where else can you pitch a show, write a show, rewrite a show, oversee casting, rehearse a show, and work closely with a director (Dev Bondarin) in preparation for a staged reading, all in a matter of weeks? I’ve participated in the lab twice now, and it’s truly an unmissable experience.

Theatre Now’s Sound Bites

Deadline in Winter

Sound Bites is a staple of the 10-minute musical scene, selecting 10 musicals annually to be featured in the festival. Theatre Now provides writers with a significant show budget with which to self-produce their piece and with mentoring and guidance throughout the process. This culminates in a fully off-book production to an often-sold-out audience. Occasionally, Theatre Now may also reach out to license your piece through MTI, adding it to their collection of 10-minute-musicals. Overall, it’s a great opportunity and practically a write of passage for NYC-based theatre writers. (See what I did there?)

Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Short Play Festival

Deadline in Spring*

A wide pool of writers is selected to present a reading of their shortform piece in the first round (plays and musicals welcome). Selected semi-finalists are then invited to present again the next day. Selected finalists then get one more opportunity to put their piece on stage, and five winners are chosen from the finalists. Winners get their piece published and licensed by Concord Theatricals. Of all the festivals I’ve participated in, this one was a highlight, (and not just because my piece won). Getting to present multiple times was fantastic, plus as a writer you get a stipend and free admission to all the different presentations.

*It looks like the festival is on hiatus this year but will be back in 2027.

A note on filming: Due to equity regulations and venue restrictions, don’t be surprised if you don’t get any video of your lab/festival presentation, or if the video you do receive is strictly for archival purposes. Your best bet (if your actors consent) is to grab a few videos yourself throughout the rehearsal process. But keep in mind that if footage is your priority, you may be better off gathering a few friends in a rehearsal room and propping your phone on a tripod.

If you’re not based in NYC, keep an eye out for local opportunities, too, such as the King’s Shorts Festival in Nova Scotia, or Pyro PlayFest in Texas. Go out to a few of your local theatre companies - you never know what they might be doing that can’t be found online.

• An unrestricted $8,000 cash grant for individual artists living in New York State.

International Theatre Festival WALIZKA

• For this festival in Poland, theatre companies and theatrical groups are invited to submit shows matching the theme. 12-14 shows from this open call will be selected for the festival.

• Theme is “Bridges of Understanding”

• Participants are responsible for production/travel/lodging, but will receive $3,000 per performance and up to $4,000 in prizes.

• Deadline: January 15th

New Works Collaboration Catalog (NWCC) – Musical Theatre Educators’ Alliance

• This is not a typical development opportunity, but rather a way to get your work in front of theatre educators, opening doors for collaboration in an educational setting. Seems like a great fit for TYA or other family-friendly shows.

• Deadline: January 15th

NJPAC Public Art Commissions

• The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark is commissioning 13 original works for the public (think murals, interactive performances, etc.)

• Theme is “Stories in Sound, Movement, and Community”

• Open to individual artists or artist collectives based in New Jersey or New York.

• Awards between $7,500-$25,000

• Deadline: January 19th

What are you looking for in a residency? Some of them are fully funded and provide travel, meals, and stipends. Some of them have high residency fees and you’re still expected to fund your own travel and food. Most of them fall somewhere in between those two extremes - partial subsidies, need-based fellowships, and more can complicate the process significantly. To make sure your energy is going where it needs to go, ask yourself what your priorities are. You may choose not to apply for anything with a residency fee, which is totally valid. But, something to consider: if you find one on the cheaper side which is located in a state or country you’d be interested in visiting anyway, an artist retreat can be a partially (or fully) subsidized way to travel the world.

Cultivate’s La Baldi Residency

• A multidisciplinary 2-4-week artist residency in Tuscany, Italy, to develop projects and engage with the local community.

• Typical fee is $440 per week, but 2 residencies are fully funded each year.

• Travel Advisory: Italy is Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution due to terrorism.

• Deadline: January 2nd (for a funded residency)

Artist–Scientist Ideas Summit & Fellowship

• A new annual Art and Science fellowship at UC Santa Barbara’s NCEAS, bringing one visual artist and one musician/composer to Santa Barbara for a week of dialogue with environmental scientists.

• This year’s theme is “Extinction and Persistence”

• Travel and lodging provided, along with $10,000

• Deadline: February 1st

Bechdel Project “Room of One’s Own” Residency

• A residency for emerging feminist playwrights and theatre makers, offered by the Bechdel Project.

• $5,000 in funding, plus access to writers retreats in Brooklyn and Germany.

One of the things our expert had to say was that almost every application wants to know the same thing about your project - What is it? Why is it important now? How is it relevant to our mission? Always take a second to familiarize yourself with the core values of an organization; it will help you to explain why you/your project are a good fit.

Quick Tip: Applications often require reusable copy like Artist Statements and Project Synopses. Even when you have the ability to type directly into the application, like on Submittable or SlideRoom, you should save your copy to Google Drive or your document manager of choice, so you can rewrite and reuse it the next time you’re asked for identical information. • A 6-12 month residency for mid-career artists at a LITERAL CASTLE in Germany.

The Emerging Artists Theatre Spark Theatre Festival

• 28th Street Theatre hosts a festival of self-produced new works at all stages of development.

• DGF provides writers with grants of $500 or more in case of crisis or emergency.

Looking Ahead: the Brooklyn Arts Council and the Queens Arts Fund both have major deadlines coming up in mid-November. If you live in Brooklyn or Queens and have a project eligible for public funding, these opportunities are not-to-be-missed and require a pretty intense application. You should probably start thinking about them now!

• This month-long residency in Montauk provides a simple, communal environment for a cohort of 4 creatives.

• Development opportunity through New Perspectives Theatre Company. Each participant writes a short play based on a provided theme. Monthly feedback meetings culminate in an end-of-year showcase featuring the 20-30-minute plays. Certain alumnae are then invited to join the lab for a second year, focused on full-length work.
